American Krupp, Canadian Macek fully committed to Germany

Feb 24, 2018

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Bjorn Krupp's journey started at the Duluth IceForum in suburban Atlanta. Brooks Macek piled up the points in Bantam hockey in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for the Notre Dame Hounds. Now they're in the Olympic gold-medal game for Germany, having advanced further than the teams from their home countries. The U.S.-born Krupp and Canadian-born Macek have German fathers and now call Germany home with no apologies for beating or scoring against the countries of their birth. When Macek scored a go-ahead power-play goal in what turned out to be a remarkable upset semifinal win against Canada, he pumped...

South Korea to fight WTO ruling on Fukushima seafood ban

Feb 24, 2018

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea said Friday it will appeal the World Trade Organization's decision against bans on imports of Japanese fishery products after the Fukushima nuclear meltdowns. The government said in a statement that the appeal was meant to protect public health and safety. It said it will maintain its existing regulations on imports of Japanese seafood. The Geneva-based WTO accepted Japan's complaint, saying South Korea's policies violated the trade body's rules, were discriminatory and served as a trade barrier. In 2013, South Korea banned imports of all fishery products from eight Japanese provinces near Fukushima after Tokyo...

European Central Bank hints at revising stimulus outlook

Feb 24, 2018

FRANKFURT, Germany — The European Central Bank could indicate as soon as March that it is mulling an earlier end to its stimulus program, minutes to the bank's last policy meeting suggested Thursday. According to the minutes to the Jan. 25 meeting, the ECB rate-setters said the "language pertaining to the monetary policy could be revisited early this year." That suggests that the 25-member governing council, which sets interest rates for the 19 countries that use the euro as currency, could indicate that the stimulus may come to an end sooner than they have so far indicated. Their next scheduled...

German business confidence drops amid global, local concerns

Feb 24, 2018

BERLIN — German business confidence dropped sharply in February amid increasing concerns about both domestic and international risks. The Munich-based Ifo Institute said Thursday its business climate indicator fell to 115.4 points in February from 117.6 in January, while noting it remained near historic highs. ING economist Carsten Brzeski says the figures show concerns about "market turmoil, the political impasse in Berlin and new fears of a protectionist wave from the U.S. as well as the U.S. tax reform" are beginning to take their toll. Despite the risks, he says "the economy should maintain its strong momentum." He says company's...

Australian leader off to US for talks with Trump, governors

Feb 24, 2018

CANBERRA, Australia — Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull heads to the United States on Wednesday, accompanied by the largest Australian political and business delegation ever to visit the U.S. President Donald Trump's softening opposition to joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership will be up for discussion when he meets Turnbull at the White House on Friday. The trade deal among 11 countries includes Australia, which also has a bilateral free trade partnership with the United States. Turnbull, a wealthy 63-year-old former Goldman Sachs partner, sees himself as having a lot in common with Trump, as they are both successful businessmen who entered politics...
